A staple of Singaporean cuisine, satay is renowned for its one-in-a-hundred taste combinations that honor the Lion City’s rich culinary past. Satay is a lovely combination of grilled meat, served with a crunchy cucumber salad and a delicious peanut sauce. This will become one of your favorite dish of all time.
The succulent meat in Singaporean satay is famed for being marinated in a flavourful mixture of herbs and spices, which include lemongrass, turmeric, garlic, and ginger, being charred to perfection. There are options for vegans, which we will explore today, and seafood enthusiasts as well as the usual meat selections of chicken, beef, and mutton. Over an open flame, the skewers are carefully cooked, adding a delicious smoky scent to the flavor.
Vegetarian satay is not easy to come along since satay is primarily a meat-based dish. But worry not, any dietary preference can be satiated in Singapore. The Circuit Road Hawker Centre is well known for its wide range of offerings to vegetarians. Victor Veggie is one such stall that brings forth a fresh new perspective and promotes inclusivity for vegetarians. Uncle Victor will not drill a hole in your pocket with sky-rocket prices. There is a minimum order for 10 skewers for SGD$12 which is quite decent, considering other vegetarian satay places are more pricy,
Now getting down to the food, the stall opens at 2:30pm. They are usually sold out at peak hour time, so a top suggestion would be to be an early bird and grab your share of skewers. Mock meat has a reputation for being chewy and having an odd texture. It is generally quite difficult to master the technique of cooking mock meat, but Uncle Victor has mastered this skill exceptionally well. Having served the crowd since his early twenties, he knows his craft very well. The satays at his stall are crispy, juicy and soft all at the same time! The flavors satisfy every satay craving cell in your body! You can smell the smoky scent as you are walking towards his stall and all that does is fuel your hunger for the deliciousness served. The satays are available in mock-mutton or mock-chicken options, although both are made with soy protein. The soy chunks are crisp on the outside with a perfectly soft center.
You would think that the star of the show would be the satay, but well, here comes the peanut sauce served along with it. With the roasted sweetness of peanuts, the not-too-overpowering coconut milk, and a variety of spices like garlic, shallots, and chili, the peanut dipping sauce by Uncle Victor is a divine concoction. A harmonious mixture of sweet and nutty flavors with a slight spice kick. Its thick and crunchy texture creates a delicious interplay of flavors and textures that wonderfully complements the soy meat perfectly. While trying the satay we were almost tempted to ask them for a box full of the peanut sauce to take home because we were sure that satay was not the only thing that would go well with that sauce.
Overall, Uncle Victor showers his magical pixie dust on all his customers. So when in Singapore do not miss out on this gem, please visit Uncle Victor for a unique dining experience that will have you come back for more.
