A newly-opened hawker stall in the well-known Alexandra Village Food Centre, Wei Min Famous Wanton Noodle (#01-36) is a hidden gem. The food centre is a stone’s throw from Queensway Shopping Centre, Anchorpoint Shopping Centre, and IKEA Queensway.
When I first came across the store, I noticed its brightly-lit signboard and colourful food depictions, which immediately caught my attention. I started up a conversation with the two young men running the stall and learnt that they just opened Wei Min Famous Wanton Noodle two weekends ago. Inspired by Malaysian-style noodles, which is where they originate from, the two of them decided to open a hawker stall in Singapore. This entrepreneurial venture is the first time either of them have run a food business.
Wei Min Famous Wanton Noodle has two main offerings, namely their Char Siew Wanton Noodles ($4.50) and their Curry Fried Chicken Cutlet Hor Fun ($5.50). They also sell Dumpling Soup ($4.50), Curry Fishballs ($5) and more.
From the moment the bowl of Char Siew Wanton Mee was placed before me, I was entranced by its inviting aroma. The noodles were perfectly cooked without any alkaline taste, springy with a comforting bite, and coated in a delectable combination of soy sauce and fragrant oil. Tender and succulent, the char siew offered a delightful contrast to the familiar egg noodles. The dish was further elevated by the juicy and flavorful wantons that were filled generously with well-seasoned pork. One unique aspect of the dish was the addition of chips, that gave an extra crunch. The dish left me yearning for more, and I was impressed with how every element complemented each other harmoniously.
As if the previous dish wasn't enough to excite my taste buds, the Curry Chicken Hor Fun took my culinary journey to new heights. The steaming hot bowl of creamy, aromatic curry was a sight to behold. The hor fun noodles were silky smooth, and the curry coated each strand in a heavenly blend of spice and creaminess. The hor fun’s wide strands made a good vessel for the curry, enabling me to slurp up the fragrantly spicy curry with each bite of noodles. The crispy chunks of chicken cutlet offered a delicious savoury crunch to the dish, while the soft potatoes added that familiar touch. Each spoonful was a taste revelation, with the curry's warmth and depth mingling perfectly with the noodles and chicken. I also noticed that they added tiny dried shrimps to the curry, creating an extra level of savoury richness. It was a comforting and soul-satisfying dish that warmed both my heart and stomach.
To round out the meal, I also ordered the Fried Wantons ($5), which came as 13 pieces of golden-brown, perfectly crispy wantons. The wantons was one of the highlights for me, with how crunchy yet juicy they were, and the addition of some mayo on the side.
The experience at Wei Min Famous Wanton Noodle was nothing short of delightful. The Char Siew Wanton Mee, Curry Fried Chicken Cutlet Hor Fun, and Fried Wantons proved to be a winning combination that left me craving for more even after I had cleaned my plate. The store has earned my wholehearted recommendation, and I am already counting down the days until my next visit.
