Bukit Merah View Nasi Lemak

Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre is situated in the central region of Singapore, located in the Bukit Merah District. A little background about Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre. Bukit Merah means Red Hill in Malay where it is a reference to red-colored soil found on this hill area. The food center is not near any MRT station. The nearest will be East-West Line, Tiong Bahru MRT station whereby you need to walk for about 10 minutes. Even though the location is not strategic you will still find numbers of people queueing and is worth dropping by as there is a few nice eateries hawker stalls to try.

What is Nasi Lemak?

I will review one of the stalls from this Food Centre located at stall number #01-24. Stall name Bukit Merah View Nasi Lemak. As some of you do not know what is Nasi Lemak meant, I will share some background of this famous Asian dish. Nasi Lemak comes from the Malay word. ‘Nasi’ means rice while ‘Lemak’ means fat or creamy. The rice is cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves. Once the rice is cooked, you will smell a fragrant aroma with rich flavor. It is usually served with a side dish. The basic Nasi Lemak comes with rice, boiled or fried egg, slices of cucumber, fried anchovies, and fried peanuts. And the final most important side will be the ‘sambal’ which is the hot spicy sauce.

Even we are able to dine in now with a maximum of 2 diners per table, I decided to dabao (takeaway) instead of dining in at this hawker centre. I arrived at about noon 12:00 PM (SGT) on Wednesday. Surprisingly this stall is busy preparing for huge delivery orders. I ordered the Chicken Wing set which includes Nasi Lemak with Chicken Wing, fried egg, and fried anchovies. I waited for quite some time due to the volume of delivery riders who came earlier than me. There have different sets available too. Luncheon meat with Otah(a Southeast Asian fish cake) set, fist cutlet set, and chicken cutlet set. The price is reasonable cost from $5.50 to $10.00 depends on your add-on.

The dabao (takeaway) packaging is good. I arrived home after 20 minutes, food is still warm and tasty. Portion wise is huge too. From my own opinion and review, rice fragrance is good. I am satisfied with the rice portion. Most of the Nasi Lemak stall only provide a small portion of rice whereby you need to add on. I am not sure if the portion will be the same for dining in. Next will be the fried egg and anchovies. Egg is normal while the anchovies are still crispy and nice. The sambal (hot spicy sauce) is slightly too spicy for me. Finally, the main set is the chicken wing. As usual, when you have a takeaway order for fried items, it is not as good as dining in. A little bit cold and the chicken wing is dry, but still acceptable.

Sharing some tips:

1. Separate out the sambal if you plan for a takeaway order. Will be spicy if it is mixed together.
2. Bring your own Tupperware/container. There charge extra for a takeaway order.
3. Avoid peak hours.
