A Singaporean Office Lady’s Lunch Hour

A unique aspect of Singaporean lifestyle, hawker centres are more than just an eating space. There, people from all walks of life bond over food of different cultures, even if just for a quick lunch.

A Singaporean Office Lady’s Lunch Hour

Visit any hawker centre during the lunch time rush and you will most likely be greeted with bustling office lunch crowds. Office workers tend to frequent hawker centres as they prove to be fuss-free and affordable for everyday meals. Kirstie Wong, a 32-year-old Communications Manager who works in One-North, says that she visits a hawker centre called “Timbre+” during her lunch hour as it is conveniently situated near her office. In a typical work week, she frequents Timbre+ on an average of 3 times a week due to how budget-friendly hawker centre meals can be.

However, one downside to dining at hawker centres is that they tend to be very overcrowded during peak hours. “If you want to secure a table, you definitely have to go early,” advised Kirstie. At lunch time, the tables of hawker centres are usually either already occupied with people or reserved with security passes or umbrellas that belong to the office workers.

At Timbre+, Kirstie highly recommends the Seafood White Bee Hoon from the stall “XLX Modern Tze Char”. The fresh prawns and juicy cockles submerged in the sumptuous broth make the noodle dish a must-try, according to Kirstie.

The usual Singaporean dishes are not the only available menu at Timbre+. Like many other hawker centres, Timbre+ is also home to stalls that sell food from other cultures such as Western and Japanese cuisine. Kirstie added, “I love how I can find such an assortment of food here that can satisfy any of my cravings.”

Besides dining at hawker centres during her lunch breaks, Kirstie also finds it convenient to buy takeaway food from hawker centres to bring back home for her family dinner. She shared that on days where she feels too tired to prepare dinner, she usually grabs some dishes from the hawker centres around her home. “Not only is it economical, it’s delicious too,” Kirstie quipped.

With a wide variety good food at honest prices, hawker centers are a convenient option when for a quick weekday lunch or when you just don't feel like cooking after a long day. It's no wonder everyone who lives in Singapore loves hawker centers.
